Areas of Practice
Traffic and speeding:

Traffic tickets seem like a minor annoyance but can become a major problem if not handled properly and quickly.
Multiple moving violations or failure to appear on a ticket can result in a suspension of driving privileges.

It is often possible for your attorney to negotiate with the prosecutor in an attempt to amend the ticket to a nonmoving violation.  You will still
pay a fine or fee but will not be saddled with a moving violation which can result in higher car insurance rates.
Drugs and Contraband:

Drug and contraband charges are a serious threat to your future and your freedom.  The simplest sharge of possession of paraphernalia or marijuana can result in a jail sentence of up to one year and a fine of up to $2,500.00 or both.  It is vital that your attorney closely review all factors involved in your stop and search to determine if and how the evidence can be suppressed.  If the judge can be convinced to suppress the evidence of the drugs no conviction can occur.  Sometimes even the most through review will not result in a winning suppression motion, but it will maximize your chances of minimizing the effect of a prosecution.  Prosecutors are more willing to amend or dismiss charges when they know the defense attorney has reviewed the search and could make his job more difficult.
DUI, DWI, Driving Under the Influence, Driving While Intoxicated:

The terms are basically interchangeable.  In most instances in Kansas the charge will be driving under the infulence of drugs or alcohol.  No matter what you call it the charge is very bad news.  First time DUI can result in six months in the county jail and a fine of up to &1,750.00 or both.  Prosecutors are forbidden by law to negotiate away or reduce a DUI charge.  It is vital that you have an attorney helping you as soon as possible.  If you do not file a request for an administrative hearing within fourteen days in Kansas you may lose your right to drive, even if you are found not guilty.  Patrick Lewis will discuss your options with you and make sure you understand all that is at stake.  He will prepare the defense to maximiize the chances of being found not guilty and to limit the damage a DUI conviction can do to you.
Domestic Battery and crimes of Domestic Violence:

In the last several years political pressures have made charges of domestic violence of any kind increasingly serious.  It is often true that if the police get called to an allegation of domestic violence they are not leaving without arresting someone.  This is not fair but it is the way of the world.  The fact that the alleged victim does not want the prosecution to proceed does not end a case.
